  1. Tell me a bit about one of your favorites that you wrote.

I enjoyed writing ‘Sinister Little Overture: Book I’ of my Symphony Noir Collection. It was fun to write because I explored situations that are considered taboo, and I got to let my imagination run wild in regards to how far I can push the envelope with some of the scenes. Creating the sexual tension between the main characters made it thrilling and exciting because, come on…. some of us have been in those types of circumstances before!

  1. Writing is a difficult endeavor. What makes you continue to write?

I don’t make lots of money, so it’s not that. I’m barely a blip on the radar in regards to my author brand and name, so it’s not the fame. The answer is simple: The love of writing is what makes me continue on.

  1. What do you look forward to every day?

Waking up nearly every morning before everyone else, making some coffee and doing my edits and writing. It sets the tone for the day, although I try not to let a missed session dictate how my day is going to be.

  1. How do you define success? What makes you successful?

Sure, success would be making a six-figure salary off of one’s books, doing tours and signings around the world, meeting millions of adoring fans. But that’s someone else’s success and would be mine one day. But for now, success is getting up in the morning and writing. And what makes me successful is not only committing to my sessions on paper by scheduling, but mentally preparing for them as well. Having that discipline takes practice and time. When I tell people, I have four books published, they’re like, ‘wow, that’s awesome!’ And to me, that’s success.

  1. Any tips for a newbie writer?

I’ve been a published author for nearly three years, so it’s safe to say I’ve been there done that. So, for anyone looking to join this endeavor, just start writing! Get it out of your head and onto paper! This was the advice given to me back in 2010 from a great friend of mine (who still is), and I did just that: I started to write. Therefore, my current books were years in the making.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, just get it down on paper. If you don’t like it, delete it then start over. You can always change things later. Even if the writing is just a bunch of notes, start with that. You can build upon it later. In the words of Ernest Hemingway, my favorite author, “There is nothing to writing. All you have to do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

Hanging out with Melissa Banczak

Hi Readers,

You know what I like just as much as reading?  It’s spending time with great authors like Melissa Banczak.  Recently, I was able to catch up with her for an interview.  Let me share my experience with you.

Melissa Banczak_Author Image

Melissa, thank you so much for the opportunity to steal you away from your busy life to answer some questions for my readers.  So, let’s begin.

  1. Tell me a bit about one of your favorites that you wrote.

I was a screenwriter for ten years so there were a lot of great characters that I created and still think about. Some produced, some not. I switched to novels a couple of years ago when I’d had enough of that life. So far, I’ve only written one full length book and a prequel, so I’m going with the novel, How to Sex Your Snake. It started as a nanowrimo back in 2004 with a place holder title of, The Aha Moment – A woman falls in love with a guy who collects snakes and then gets caught up in a murder mystery, all while trying to figure out what she wants out of life. I hit the word count but the story was only 2/3rds of the way done and I had no idea how to end it. So I set it aside. Then a couple of years later, my husband left me in charge of his 100 or so snakes (most were babies) while he was out of the country for a year.

One of the first days, I walked into the bathroom and found myself nose to nose with a 9 foot boa hanging from the bathroom light. My daughter had put the snake in the shower and when she’d been done, the snake had climbed up on the light to dry. Everyday was something new and by the time my husband got back, I had the changes I needed for my book, a great new title, and a heroine who had no one to blame for her misery but herself thanks to her bad choices. Maybe because June is completely my creation, she is my favorite. There won’t be an actress to make choices and change how she interacts with the world. She’s all mine.

2.  Writing is a difficult endeavor.  What makes you continue to write?

I have no idea! I’m horribly lazy. Notes from my readers help. People asking for the next in the series or what else I’m working on. Seeing sales on my amazon dashboard and knowing I have no idea who those people are. I’m a tiny bit ambitious so that helps me pop my computer in the case and head out to the coffee house. I hate the idea of my characters being stuck in limbo. (my head)

  1. What do you look forward to every day?

Chocolate cake! Some days, one of the only ways to get out the door, is to tell myself I’ll get a slice of chocolate cake and eat it while I write. I never do, though. I look at the cake in the case and think about how great it would taste. And then at the last minute, I change my mind. I think about how crappy I’ll feel with all that sugar in my system. And I just get tea. But, I absolutely love chocolate cake, so on some days, the very idea of it is the only way to get me on my way. I never write at home. Too many distractions.

  1. How do you define success? What makes you successful?

Selling books! As long as people are buying I’m a happy camper. I have enough sales on Amazon to suggest that I’m building an audience. Hopefully, they want more. As I write the sequel to How to Sex Your Snake, I’m world building two additional series. I plan on holding back both until they’re complete then rapid releasing. Probably one every month. When readers find a series they like they want to binge. I know I do.

  1. Any tips for a newbie writer?

You know your story. Don’t ever let anyone talk you out of telling it. Yeah, an editor will help you shape it but if there’s something that you really don’t want to change, fight for it. But understand why you want to keep whatever it is. And be able to explain the reason. If you can’t, you don’t need whatever it was.

The amazing Judith Barrett

Hi Readers,

Recently I had the chance to interview a sweet, kind soul who also writes fabulous books.

Take a look at my interview with Judith A. Barrett:

  1. Tell me a bit about one of your favorites that you wrote.

“The Girl Who Saw Clouds” is my favorite of my published books. It’s a compilation of all my interests-children with autism, farming, self-sufficiency, Florida weather, dogs, running, chickens, ham radio, baking brownies, offbeat humor, unicorns, pizza, and adventure.  I just gave you a synopsis of the entire book!

  1. Writing is a difficult endeavor. What makes you continue to write?

I have stories inside my head and heart, and I would explode if I didn’t let them out. I’ve always been a great storyteller, and I love learning. It’s been a struggle and a joy to learn how to transform those stories into words that invite the reader into the story on the page. I certainly agree it’s difficult and a lot of work.

“The Girl Who Saw Clouds” underwent 108 revisions before it was published. One of the things that kept me going was the encouragement of my beta readers who helped me see the improvements from one version to the next.

  1. What do you look forward to every day?

Every day I wake up ready for the day’s adventure with my husband and dogs. I’m a retired project manager, and I plan. I have a list for everything I’m going to do that day, that week, and that month. I have a five–year plan. I am thrilled every time I mark something completed. God, of course, knows how much I love to plan and frequently flips my plans to the side and says, “Nice plan. We’re going to do this instead.” His plans are always much more interesting than mine.

  1. How do you define success? What makes you successful?

I’ve always had two criteria for success: 1. Am I learning? 2. Am I having fun? If it’s not fun and I’m not learning, then it’s time to move on to something else. Maybe there’s one more thing-Did I get to check something off my list?

  1. Any tips for a newbie writer?

Consider any feedback as a gift, even negative feedback. Join a critique group. I like the online groups because I don’t have to show up anywhere at a certain time wearing shoes. Learn from everybody. Develop an eye for what’s good and what’s not. Read blogs and articles. Join a writers’ association. Attend workshops and seminars. Never publish a book before you hire an editor to review your manuscript. (Don’t be that guy.) Learn, learn, learn. And have fun!
